Amazon has launched a last mile fleet consisting entirely of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. The move is part of Amazon’s ongoing commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve its goal of becoming net-zero carbon by 2040. This initiative is set to involve over 300 Delivery Service Partners (DSPs) in India, marking a global first for Amazon.
Under the program, DSPs will have the opportunity to lease a tailored fleet of electric three-wheeler vehicles, designed to meet Amazon’s delivery needs. These zero-emission EVs will not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also enhance safety and punctuality in the delivery process.
One of the key features of the program is the support it offers to DSPs in maintaining, charging, and parking these electric vehicles. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that these EVs remain operational and readily available for deliveries, supporting the commitment to safety and efficiency.
The initial phase of the program introduces Mahindra Zor Grand three-wheeler EVs, which are customised to suit Amazon’s last mile delivery requirements. These vehicles are equipped with advanced technology, including telematics, digital rear-view cameras, and safety enhancements. The Mahindra Zor Grand boasts impressive capabilities, with a top speed of 50 kmph and a range of over 100 kms on a single charge, all without emitting harmful pollutants
Amazon’s decision to launch this all-electric fleet in India aligns with the company’s broader strategy to transition to clean energy and reduce its environmental impact. “We are committed to being net-zero carbon by 2040, and decarbonizing our delivery network is an important part of getting us to that goal,” stated Abhinav Singh, VP of operations for Amazon India. He further expressed his delight that India is the first country to implement such an initiative.
Suman Mishra, MD and CEO of Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, commended Amazon’s endeavour toward a cleaner and more sustainable future in last mile logistics, emphasising the benefits of zero tailpipe emissions and improved air quality. The Mahindra Zor Grand’s reliability is expected to enhance cargo delivery efficiency while reducing driver fatigue.
The launch of the last mile fleet program in India is a significant step toward Amazon’s larger goal of deploying 10,000 electric vehicles in its Indian fleet by 2025. With support from Mahindra Electric and other vehicle manufacturers, Amazon has already deployed over 6,000 EVs in more than 400 cities across India. The company’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond India, as seen with the recent $10 million investment in C40 Cities to reimagine zero-emission freight shipping in Latin American and Indian cities.
Tom Chempananical, Director Global Fleet and Products at Amazon, emphasised the importance of such programs in decarbonising last mile delivery operations. This initiative, in partnership with DSPs, vehicle manufacturers, and other experts, is expected to pave the way for more innovative and sustainable solutions in the delivery industry.
Amazon’s Delivery Service Partner program provides infrastructure, technology, and a suite of services, enabling entrepreneurs to establish thriving small businesses that deliver to Amazon India’s customers nationwide.
