2024 Suzuki Swift engine specifications, fuel efficiency revealed

New Z-series petrol engine

The 2024 Swift makes use of a new Z12E 3-cylinder petrol engine, replacing the older 1.2L K12C engine. While it continues with 1.2L displacement, Suzuki has reduced one cylinder and increased the compression ratio, to enhance its efficiency. The new engine in the Japan-spec Swift puts out 82PS of power at 5700rpm and 108Nm of torque at 4500rpm.

Compared to the older 1.2L 4-cylinder petrol engine, the new engine is down by around 8PS on power and 5Nm on torque. However, the new engine produces its power early in the rev band, which at least on paper promises better driveability. Suzuki also offers the option of a mild-hybrid system with the engine, like before, which marginally improves real-world fuel efficiency. In addition, the new mild hybrid system also delivers an additional 3PS of power and 60Nm of torque as and when required for a brief duration.

Speaking of transmission emissions, the 5-speed manual transmission is joined by a new continuously variable transmission (CVT) in the Japanese market. The new CVT transmission is lighter than the earlier iterations and tuned to deliver more efficiency. In terms of fuel efficiency — the non-hybrid Swift offers a WLTC-certified efficiency of 23.4kmpl whereas the mild hybrid offers 24.5kmpl fuel efficiency.

2024 Swift India launch plans

Maruti Suzuki hasn’t revealed a timeline for the 2024 Swift launch. The local testing for the new Swift has already begun, as revealed by recent spy shots. While we are fairly confident that the new Swift will come with the new Z-series 1.2L petrol engine, it remains to be seen if it also comes bundled with the new CVT transmission or continues with the more-affordable automated manual transmission (AMT).
