India Bike Week 2023: a decade of riding stories, unity, and adrenaline

The coastal breeze of Goa played host to the roar of engines and the symphony of rubber meeting the road at the 10th edition of India Bike Week (IBW) 2023. This annual pilgrimage for motorcycling enthusiasts celebrated a decade of biking culture, adventure, and unity under the theme ‘Everyone as One.’ WIONDrive had the opportunity to sit down with Martin Da Luca, the event planner behind this grand spectacle, to delve into the evolution of IBW over the last ten years.

A decade of evolution

Martin reflected on the transformative journey of IBW. Ten years ago, when the biking culture was in its infancy, the event hosted a modest gathering of a few hundred bikers with machines exceeding 500cc. Fast forward to the present, and the landscape has evolved dramatically. “Through the Triumph 400cc scrambler and Harley’s 440X, there are at least 100,000 new bikers on the scene in the last six months,” Martin remarked. The biking community in India has not just grown; it has thrived, creating a vibrant tapestry of riders from all walks of life.

From Delhi to Goa: the genesis of IBW

Recalling the inception of IBW, Martin shared insights into the early days when the idea took shape during a meeting with the Harley Davidson president in Delhi. The challenges were apparent, primarily financial. However, with support from Harley and a conviction that Indian biking was destined to flourish, Martin embarked on what he knew would be a decade-long journey. “We knew it was going to be 10-20 years of doing India Bike Week year after year,” Martin affirmed. The vision was clear, and the event has grown to become an annual extravaganza that unites bikers from across the nation.

The changing face of biking culture in India

Beyond the event’s evolution, the biking culture itself has undergone a significant transformation. India Bike Week has played a pivotal role in making biking not just a mode of transport but a lifestyle. The infusion of women riders into the culture is a testament to this shift. Martin highlighted how, even in the early years of IBW, they were contacted by the Bike Ernie’s, an all-women biking club. “Now, when you go around India Bike week, it’s loads of women bikers. It’s a very mixed, very nice environment,” he observed.

IBW’s 10th Year: ‘For All’

This year’s IBW carried the tagline ‘For All,’ encapsulating the inclusive spirit that has become synonymous with the event. From electric two-wheelers to 500cc bikes, scooters to 1000cc beasts, IBW welcomed all riders to revel in the weekend of camaraderie and shared passion. This inclusivity extends beyond the event itself, raising questions about the impact on India’s infrastructure.

IBW and infrastructure: riding into the future

Discussing the potential influence of IBW on India’s infrastructure, Martin acknowledged the advancements made in road infrastructure over the last five years. However, he emphasised the need for continued work on road safety. “There’s a lot of work to be done on road safety, and we’re doing that work,” Martin affirmed. While acknowledging the improvements, he noted that there are still places in India with minimal infrastructure, providing riders with the opportunity to explore untamed roads.

IBW 2023 highlights: a fusion of passion and thrills

IBW’s 10th-anniversary edition was not just a milestone; it was a culmination of electrifying events, thrilling races, and a celebration of the biking spirit. The Big Trip, located on Vagator Hill, featured captivating sessions by seasoned riders, igniting a passion for globetrotting on two wheels.

Overlander’s sessions included inspiring talks by bikers like Noor (Nomadic Hijabi Rider), Arjun Raina (MotoExotica India), Juvena Huang (The Wandering Wasp), and the dynamic couple, Simon and Lisa Thomas, who shared their journey of covering over 8,00,000 km together on motorcycles.

Racing fever at IBW: tracks and triumphs

IBW 2023 showcased specially designed tracks, embracing the “Bring Your Own Bike” (BYOB) culture. From the CEAT – challenging Flat Track to the Enduro track and the thrilling Mud Rush, racing enthusiasts experienced an intensified racing fever. Manufacturer parades, Club Marathons, Club Games, and the adrenaline-pumping Wheelie Ring of Fire added to the spectacle. The highly anticipated IBW Bike Build-Off championship saw Bulleteer Customs clinching victory, while Kunwar Customs triumphed in the Mod Bike Competition.

Product launches: unveiling the best in biking

Partner brands unveiled new additions to their product portfolios at IBW 2023. The much-anticipated Aprilia RS 457 was launched at an ex-showroom price of INR 4.10 lakhs. Kawasaki introduced the most affordable W175 Street retro-style motorcycle at INR 1.35 lakhs. Triumph showcased its ‘Stealth Edition’ lineup, featuring models like Speedmaster Red Stealth Edition and Bonneville T100 Blue Stealth Edition.

Musical extravaganza: a sonic journey

The sonic journey at IBW 2023 was just as diverse and exhilarating as the biking experiences. Nucleya, Gully Gang, Disco Kid, Gurbax, Nash, Vipin Mishra Project, and others curated an eclectic fusion of hip-hop, electronic beats, retro tunes, and soulful performances. Attendees were immersed in an unforgettable audio-visual feast, transcending genres and ensuring an unmissable experience.

A tribute to a decade of biking

Martin Da Luca expressed his gratitude to the riders who have been an integral part of this incredible journey. “This Tenth Year of IBW is a tribute to each one of you – riders from every corner, contributing to the success of the Festival,” he acknowledged. IBW’s legacy is etched in the memories of riders who have experienced the joy of the open road, the camaraderie of fellow bikers, and the celebration of a shared passion. As the engines quiet down, the echoes of IBW’s 10th edition linger on, a testament to a decade of riding stories, unity, and adrenaline.
