Automotive design stands out as an artistic blend of engineering skills, responsible for the visual identity of vehicles. It comprises of an extensive spectrum of elements, featuring the slim outlines of the outer parts, to the seats that are technically sound and ergonomically built. At the core of the automotive design is a right combination of techniques that makes the automobiles not only beautiful but also functional and safe, a modern day symbol of mobility.

Global icons in automotive design

Globally, the automotive design field has succeeded due to the exemplary talent and amazing creations of visionaries whose contribution means that the industry has been deeply affected by their work. The great icons, such as Marcello Gandini, who is known for the most iconic design of the Miura, Giorgetto Giugiaro, the man of the famous design of the Volkswagen Golf, and Ian Callum, the man who is responsible for what we see now in the Jaguar models, they are the people who shaped automotive aesthetics the way it is. Their brilliance and novelty have motivated designers the world over through generations.

Notable institutions nurturing design talent

Tucked behind every revolutionary design is educational competence that makes it stand out. For example, art schools like ArtCenter College of Design in California and Royal College of Art in London are the homes for the rising stars who are now proudly designing their products. The development of great automotive brands gives birth to innovation, creativity and engineering excellence which are their competitive edge and staple.

Void in India’s automotive design landscape

India is regarded as one of best automotive production bases for last few years, rolling out millions of vehicles every year. However, in all this industrial vigor there has been one thing conspicuously missing, which is – an institution that was devoted to enhancing automotive design talent. The lack of a local automotive design school is the major factor motivating the country to obtain foreign design collaborators and so hindering the fabrication of an efficient designer ecosystem.

INDEA: bridging the gap in automotive design education

Realizing the importance of fostering domestic design talent, Indian School for Design of Automobiles (INDEA) appears as the ray of hope. The vision for INDEA is to bring both XLRI and the automotive industry luminary Avik Chattopadhyay together, and to set a new benchmark for automotive design education in India. Intent on cultivating creativity, innovation, and an industry aligned competencies, INDEA wants to transform cultural automotive design patterns.

Vision of INDEA

”Creating great designers and design managers” is the twofold aim behind INDEA, according to KS Casimir, Director of XLRI. “We are an institute of management,” he says, which shows that INDEA not only nurtures talent but also develops leadership capability inside automotive design realm.

Operational timeline and academic offerings

With the goal to start operations by the end of 2025, INDEA is expected to have a complete master program in the Automobile Design And Management. The curriculum designed to be fit for industry, consists of the range of topics from the design familiarity up to the latest automotive technologies. In addition, INDEA will be offering refresher courses to experienced designers and inductions for CXOs of other organizations, helping to keep DI expertise up-to-date.

A holistic learning environment

INDEA’s curricular structure is more than just the classroom tutorials traditionally designed. Seminars, master-classes, and workshops will be a regular part of the institution’s year scheme and they will provide the students with practical synthesis of the knowledge. Besides, a proposal on automobile restoration also seeks to conserve and commemorate the unique legacy of automotive craftsmanship.

Industry collaboration and mentorship

Avik Chattopadhyay, who has been a prominent figure in the automotive industry for many years, will play a critical role in the leadership of INDEA. Through a career with reputable companies such as Maruti Suzuki, Volkswagen, and Apollo Tyres, Chattopadhyay has already demonstrated his capability to make INDEA leader in the industry. Furthermore, the panel of mentors made up of the luminaries Gautam Sen and Justice Indira Banerjee depicts the board’s concern for mentoring the industry and guiding it in the right direction.

Empowering the next generation of design innovators

For aspiring designers, INDEA symbolizes an entrance door to make their automotive design dreams come true. By using cutting-edge infrastructure, developing curriculum tailored to industry directions, and providing specialized mentoring from one’s peers, the students at INDEA will be talented to model, computerize and validate the complex field of automotive design confidently.

Shaping India’s automotive design destiny

Alongside its disruptive campaign and the vision to set a new benchmark in the design of automobiles in India, Indian School for Design of Automobiles mirrors the seismic change the India story is about to undergo in this field. With the aim of establishing an ethos of innovation, quality, and teamwork, INDEA is prepared to evolve the side of design that is now associated with Indian automotive design, and India will strife ahead towards innovation and design leadership.
