Hyundai Mobis, a global auto parts supplier, has introduced a pioneering ‘Parabolic Motion Glovebox,’ drawing inspiration from aircraft overhead bins, to cater specifically to electric vehicles (EVs). The first application of this inventive glovebox design will be seen in Kia’s expansive electric SUV, the EV9. The unique concept enhances glovebox capacity and user convenience, addressing concerns of knee collision upon opening.
The ‘Parabolic Motion Glovebox’ concept is derived from the trajectory of aircraft overhead bins, mirroring their curved path. This approach contrasts with the conventional glovebox design found in traditional vehicles, which typically rotates or opens through covers. In EVs, where design deviates from internal combustion vehicles, Hyundai Mobis exploits additional interior space to extend the glovebox capacity to over 8 litres.
Hyundai Mobis achieved a significant increase in glovebox capacity through the parabolic-motion approach. While traditional internal combustion vehicles offer around 5.5 litres of glovebox space, this unique design innovation augments capacity to over 8 litres. The expanded capacity allows storage of larger items compared to conventional counterparts and boasts enhanced user features, simplifying item retrieval and insertion while reducing the risk of knee collisions during glovebox access.
This cutting-edge glovebox concept stemmed from an in-house idea contest, winning a gold medal in Hyundai Mobis’ 2021 internal competition. The idea’s evolution from a contest entry to a tangible product underscores the company’s commitment to fostering innovative R&D culture among employees. Since 2019, Hyundai Mobis has accumulated over 3,200 ideas through voluntary and creative initiatives, reaffirming its dedication to user-centric technological advancements.
Choi Jae-seob, Head of Trim Module Engineering Sector at Hyundai Mobis, emphasized the company’s dedication to redefining passenger space for the future of mobility. The introduction of the ‘Parabolic Motion Glovebox’ reflects Hyundai Mobis’ ongoing pursuit of bespoke technologies that prioritize an enhanced user experience.
The innovative glovebox design is set to debut in Kia’s EV9, aligning with Hyundai Mobis’ mission to revolutionize EV interiors and elevate user convenience.
