Magna has secured its first contract with a Chinese OEM to supply a reconfigurable seating system, marking a milestone in its 65-year history of shaping vehicle consumer experiences and designs. This innovative system introduces fully rotating front seats on extended rails, offering a flexible cabin layout that maximises interior space.
The reconfigurable seating solution by Magna prioritises adaptability, allowing vehicles to adjust to consumer needs rather than vice versa. The integration of power swivel seats and nearly two meters of extended rails enables a 270-degree rotation for both the driver and front passenger seats. This setup enhances seat track articulation for front and rear occupants, providing a versatile seating arrangement tailored to individual preferences.
Key features include integrated seat belts designed for optimal strength and adjustability in diverse scenarios. Additionally, a universal magnetic interface on the seat backs facilitates connectivity with various external devices, enhancing functionality and entertainment options.
Magna’s engineering team in China collaborated closely with the OEM to tailor the seating system to local market dynamics and future mobility trends. By leveraging customer-defined scenarios such as parenting, long-distance travel, camping, and storage, Magna adapted its innovative technology to enhance the in-cabin experience.
John Wyskiel, President of Magna Seating, emphasised the company’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction amidst evolving global mobility trends. He highlighted Magna’s robust research and development capabilities worldwide, particularly in China, enabling agile responses to market demands and the creation of localised solutions.
Production of the reconfigurable seating system will commence at Magna’s facility in China, with mass production slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024, targeting the Chinese automotive market. This initiative underscores Magna’s dedication to delivering cutting-edge automotive technology and meeting industry demands with forward-thinking solutions.
